about

Memories of the river Tawd in Skelmersdale,

lyrics

Burnt, black bark and ferns in rain
Deep, dark earth of clod-close clay
moss on cobble sandstone grey
This is where my heart remains

And in among the birch and beech
The air is wet with muddy green
Beneath the bushes’ thorny weave
And echoes ripple through the leaves

That’s where I’ll be

The puddle river, rusty friend
With broken bridges at each bend
And slag heap wall beneath the trees
And out there where the magpie steals
That’s where I’ll be

And everything that I've done since
and will do in the decades hence
Is somehow flavoured, seen, or swayed
By burnt black bark and ferns in rain.
And there where the bullfinch plays
That's where I'll stay.
