1 Boot Sale
Boot sale Sunday morning, cool air clears the head
He found The Hollies Sing Dylan
and she found a marionette
They bought a Chinese frog that sits
on the kitchen floor
Watching the sun creep in
through a crack in the kitchen door
Way down South they wait on the city’s platforms
Toe to toe jumping into the eye of the storm
And the driver says “Be careful what you wish for!”
Just watch the sun creep in
through a crack in the kitchen door
And far across the sea in Spain
a man sits on his bed
He chimes complaints about this and that,
the things inside his head
And he wonders if he should have tried for more
And then the sun creeps in through a crack in the kitchen door
Sit back, sit down, slow down,
listen to the sounds that float around.

Sawdust and the sand

2 Sawdust and the Sand
Down in Bodega Las Hermanas there’s a man
Who sits with a mistela in his hand
And a saucer of tramusos, their skins tossed into
the sawdust and the sand.
And his shirt is open at the neck
There’s a Cristo de la Vida on his chest
No time or destination, no great desire for conversation
Amongst the wine and cigarettes.
But in his eye there’s a dancer, a sharp player of cards,
And in his mind the world is changing much too fast
There’s an old Sorolla above the bar
The oranges, the boats at El Palmar
Toothpicks and perspiration, the ashes of a generation on the floor
There’s still a barrel of mistela on the stand
And outside the city’s leaving him behind
Amongst the Ducados and tramusos, their skins tossed into
the sawdust and the sand.

3 Cream and Caviar
Slipping out with overcoat and scarf
Out into the winter for a jar
And a pint will do just fine til the sun comes back to shine
One day there’ll be cream and caviar.
Chin up lass, please don’t be afraid
Only seven days til we get paid
And a smile upon your face would dull this winter’s rage
One day there’ll be cream and caviar

Pale
Pale and rising to a deeper blue
Beautifies and blisters, breaking, shaping forming new.
Like the spider fingers on the trees all winter-shorn
The shadows paint the land clay brown and weather-worn.
Time has brought me this way again
To wind my way under these skies again
And under these skies the same wind blows, the same trees stand
And the ghosts of all of those who work the dusty land
Only half a mile or so, breathe in and let it go
Bright but sketching the cleanest lines
My back turns itself to the wind this time
The trees the land the earth I tread are all the same
It’s hearts and minds and situations that change
Only half a mile or so, breathe in and let it go.

5 Pekin Siege
I’ve got a pot of ginger tea,
A scintillating repartee.
My shag pile goes up to your knee,
warm luxurious and deep.
I did a course in carpentry,
I built a spice rack I filled last week
With all the spice a man could need
Why won’t you come around and see?
And now that I’ve read all those books upon my shelf
You’d be surprised at all the stories I can tell about myself.
I’ve read about the Pekin Siege
And voyages cross the Arctic sea
And now I’d like to ask you please.
Why won’t you come around and see?

Air is rain

Rainy Thing
A dozen faces form and fade in tooth-white flume and silver braid
And sky is land and land sky-made across the time-still boundless parade.
Mud on heel and backdoor lit, our timing was just out a bit.
From where I stand to where you sit
And harmony, no easy fit.
Oh no it’s never going to get this close again
I don’t suppose it’s ever going be so near
Oh no it’s never going to be this good again
I don’t suppose it’s ever going be so clear
Looking back the way we came to meet the moment once again
And rain is air and air is rain, and endless changes rearrange.

7 Sintrom Song
Your rhythm’s all wrong, they’re going to give you Sintrom
You’re going to have cardioversion
They’re going to give you Sintrom
Your rhythm’s all wrong, they’re going to give you Sintrom
You better cut down on beer and rum
They’re going to give you Sintrom
Your rhythm’s all wrong, they’re going to give you Sintrom
You can run but not for too long
They’re going to give you Sintrom
Every Friday at half past nine,
I go down the clinic and I wait in line for my Sintrom
Prick your little finger, make your blood go thinner

8 Wide Open
He learned some things today maybe better left unspoken
And he agreed, ”you can say that again”
“And for the record, well, I’d rather not say”.
Let’s be honest, given the choice
He would rather things were left wide open.
He loves the wheels within wheels,
I like to leave things unbroken
He took me in and showed me the painting
A portrait that she did of him sitting cross-legged
And I would say that given the chance
He would rather things were left wide open.
“I wouldn’t if I were you; right now he’s so suspicious and confused”
“It’d do him more harm than good, if you’re interested in my point of view”
But I would say as a matter of fact
He would rather things were left wide open.

9 Returning
Step by step, ears burning under hat and coat
Light footing over frost and icy slab
Along the well-trodden route you grab
Each sound and smell
Fall deep into the memory-well.
Shifting time through sharpened senses floats
Safe and sound to satisfy the yearning
To this place each year returning
A thousand crisp cold mornings
Long left behind on dusty shelves
Now opening up each one before me
Each one returning on itself

10 Gijón
Rest a while now, my love. Do not wake just yet.
To walls rebuilt in bottle-green and streets uneven set
Stretching out before you under tower and crane
Once flattened and lost in dynamite and rain.
When the bluster of the morning jolts you out of blissful sleep
We’ll walk the sandy arc to where the city meets the deep.
Salt air upon the headland and in the streets below
The chime of raised glasses lands round each corner to and thro
And sometimes though you’re weary
There’s still oil left in the jar
And if you look out to the ocean,
it’s dark enough to see the stars
From wood stools on slate floors we’ll drink this bottle to its dregs
But rest a while now, my love. Do not wake just yet.

11 Seems You’re Human
Soul shines through
Your eyes reveal
A side of you I’d never seen before.
Time has tested you
Stretched your confidence
It seems you’re human after all
Blue room
You’ve lost that knack
Don’t look so ice-cool any more
A change of wind
You’ve lost your tack
It seems you’re human after all.
